Public Landing Restaurant for Sweetest Day: Bites Nearby

Treat your sweet to an evening out in a unique building in Lockport.

Sweetest Day is Saturday.

“Bah humbug!” you shout.

Is it just another contrived holiday originated by the greeting card industry that commercialism has latched onto with fervor?

The most widespread lore suggests that in 1922, candy-maker Herbert Birch Kingston gave candy away in Cleveland, OH, to those he deemed unfortunate and overlooked: orphans, elderly and the infirmed.

If you choose to participate in Sweetest Day this year, besides the plethora of cards, candy and flowers at your disposal, an excuse for a nice dinner out could be in order.

The Public Landing Restaurant in Lockport has a special menu for the occasion.

For the weekend of Oct. 14-16, a four course Sweetest Day dinner is offered for $85.

The meal includes a bottle of wine or two cocktails, along with a choice of appetizer - either Bruschetta Milanese or Brown Sugar Marinated Pork Satays - followed by soup or salad.

Selected entrees include Chicken Paillard Espanol, Slow-Roasted Prime Rib, Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna, Lake Superior Whitefish, Sliced Beef Tenderloin and Risotto De Mar.

Dessert offerings for sharing include Chocolate Lava Cake, Creme Brûlée or Public Landing’s original Caramelized Basket filled with Godiva white chocolate mousse, fresh berries and strawberry sauce.

The actual value of the meal is listed as $120 dollars. Signing up for the loyalty program can earn “Canal Cash” for future visits.

Public Landing is located in the historic Gaylord Building, which was constructed in 1838 and originally used during the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal.

The building exterior was also used in the filming of “Public Enemies” with Johnny Depp.

The rich wood and stone interior, offset by well-manicured grounds and a courtyard, can help create the perfect ambiance for a romantic evening.

And furthermore, you can enjoy being with your sweetie, whether the prompt for an evening out was caving to commercialism or a genuine embrace of Sweetest Day.
