Smokey Row Antiques Celebrates 10 Years in Downtown Lemont

Local couple Gary and Sue Roy have made a living sharing their love of antiques.

For the past decade, Lemont couple Gary and Sue Roy have turned their passion for antiques into a dream job.

Last month, the Roys celebrated the 10th anniversary and grand re-opening of their store, , which is located at 112 Stephen St. in downtown Lemont.

The store specializes in jewelry, specialty gifts and eclectic home decor. In addition, the Roys conduct estate sales and restore dolls and teddy bears.

“I’ve had a passion for antiques since I was a child,” Sue Roy said. “So has Gary. We’ve both always been drawn to history and vintage items.”

And the duo is always on the lookout for store merchandise.

“We like to take roadtrips and we’ll go to different antique shops or flea markets,” Sue Roy said. “And people will come in (to the store) and want to sell things we don’t want. And when we conduct estate sales,  sometimes we buy things—we’re just always hunting.”

The Roys enjoy the education they receive running an antique shop.

“Sometimes we’ll find something we have absolutely no idea what it is,” Sue Roy said. “It’s a constant learning experience.”

Some people may not know that the Roys also run a bed and breakfast above the shop, called . The inn includes four private suites to choose from, as well as common areas for guests to relax.

“We’ve been open for a few years,” Sue Roy said. “People will come to stay, but we’ll also do small events there, like bridal showers and baby showers and birthday parties.”

The Roys enjoy running a shop in Lemont.

“We wanted a store in an historic area and we always loved Lemont,” Sue Roy said. “When the building became available it was just what we were looking for.”

The business also helped them decide where to make their home, she said.

“We moved here to be closer to the business, but also because we really do love Lemont,” she said.
