Businesses Host 'Stroll Through Historic Downtown' to Support Local Economy

Starting at noon on Saturday, several businesses in downtown Lemont will have free food and special discounts for all visitors.

Lemont business owners are taking part in a special event this weekend to promote commerce in the downtown area.

"A Stroll Through Historic Downtown Lemont" will take place Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Visitors will spend the afternoon traveling to participating businesses, enjoying free food and special discounts on merchandise and services.

The event was organized by Michelle Zaper, owner of Belle de Jour In Style and Belle de Jour Salon.

"The idea is to get people into the downtown area and into our stores, which benefits our local economy," she said.

The "Stroll" is the third such event organized by Zaper. In July, dozens of local restaurants and shops participated in the Taste of Lemont and Sidewalk Sale.

"Every time we do something like this, it brings more people down here," Zaper said. "I think sometimes it just seems like downtown Lemont fell off the map."

Visitors will start the day at Belle de Jour In Style, 114 Stephen St., where they will enjoy free cocktails and discounted merchandise. They will also receive a ticket to be signed at each stop, which can then be entered to win manicures, pedicures, meals, gift certificates and more.

Renee Sokolis, co-owner of The World According To Boutique, said she didn't think twice when Zaper approached her about participating in the event.

"It's exciting--I really think it adds some spirit to the downtown shops," Sokolis said.

The event is free of cost, but visitors are encouraged to bring non-perishable items to be donated to the Lemont Food Pantry. Boxes for donations will be set up at each stop.
