Whiz Kids: Lemont Girl Scout Service Unit 724

The girls will sing Christmas carols, make crafts, and pass out hot chocolate and cookies during the village's annual Hometown Holiday celebration Saturday.

Each week, Lemont Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.

We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.  Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to Local Editor Amanda Luevano at amanda@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the information included below.

Whiz Kids' Accomplishment: Members of Lemont Girl Scout Unit 724 will provide plenty of Christmas fun for the community this weekend at the village's annual "Hometown Holiday" celebration.

As they've done in years past, the girls will decorate more than a dozen Christmas trees for the downtown area. Most trees have a theme or message reflected in the decorations.

The girls will gather n Budnik Plaza at 4:30 p.m. to sing Christmas carols before Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves lights the main tree at 5 p.m. They will provide hot chocolate and cookies throughout the event, which will run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Lemont.

Whiz Kids' Key to Awesomeness: The girls will also get in the holiday spirit with a 50-minute workshop in , 103 Stephen St. The workshop will include Christmas crafts, jewelry, cookie decorating, Christmas tattoos and stickers. The older Girl Scouts assist the younger girls, and serve hot chocolate, cookies and marshmallows to the community in front of the restaurant.

This year, the Girl Scouts are also sponsoring the inaugural “Christmas Cards to Heroes” program. They will supply all the cards, paper and writing utensils for the community to write Christmas notes to soldiers overseas.

The community is invited to Community Christian Church, 102 Stephen St., to write a note to the soldiers, or to donate useful items/trinkets like old Halloween candy.
