Rock Blasting Begins at Lemont Water Reclamation Plant

Blasts heard near the Lemont Water Reclamation Plant are part of a project to improve storm water management.

Lemont residents, don't be alarmed if you hear—or feel—blasts in the area.

Rock blasting operations will be starting soon at the Lemont Water Reclamation Plant at 13 Stephen St. The blasting sets in motion work on a $30 million Wet Weather Treatment Facility project to improve storm water management. The Lemont project is part of ongoing upgrades to the region's waste-water treatment facilities infrastructure.

The blasting portion of the project has begun and the hauling operations will continue until the blasting ends around June 2014.  Although the exact times of the blasting is not known, the contractor has relayed the general schedule so the public will be aware of the cause of the blasts. The blasts will be generally occurring three times daily: once in the morning, then around noon and again in the late afternoon.

Once the rock excavation is complete, rock anchors and rebar work will begin in the reservoir with concrete scheduled for a mid-late summer commencement that will continue until winter 2014.  Utility work onsite and at Stephen Street's entrance is likely to start in mid-summer, just prior to the concrete operations for the reservoir.
