Military Wounded Eligible for Silver Star Banner

Wounded and ill members of the of U.S. Armed Forces can request the banner.

Military veterans who were wounded and ill members of the of U.S. Armed Forces can request a Silver Star Service Banner.

The program was initiated by Cook County Commissioner Joan Patricia Murphy to honor the wounded and ill members of the United States Armed Forces from all wars and conflict zones.

Formed by the Silver Star Families of America, this is the sixth consecutive year that banners will be presented to heroic veterans on their day of honor coming up on May 21. “Silver Star Banner Service Day” encourages states, municipalities and counties to present banners to wounded or ill service men and women so that their sacrifice may never be forgotten.

“Today’s ceremony gives us a chance to thank these heroes for their selfless service, sacrifice and commitment,” Murphy said. “All veteran are extraordinary human beings and true patriots.”

The free Silver Star Banners are available to any Armed Forces personnel either currently serving honorably or those that have served in ANY WAR or combat/conflict zone or was wounded by enemy action or has been injured or contracted. Those with a serious illness who could be rated at least a 10-percent disabled by the Dept. of Veterans Affairs are also eligible to receive a banner. All wounds, injuries or illnesses must have originated in a war or combat zone.

To arrange a Silver Star Banner for yourself, a friend or family member can request a Silver Star Banner form by calling Cook County Commission Murphy at 708-389-2125. Forms are available can also be picked up at her 6th District Office at 5405 W. 127th St. in Crestwood.  Banner request forms must be received by April 25.

Silver Star Banner recipients are also eligible to receive their banner at the Silver Star Honorary Ceremony and Presentation at the Cook County Board Room, at 118 N. Clark St., Chicago, on May 21. RSVP by calling Bill Brown at 312-603-6406 to confirm your attendance. Those that do not wish to attend the ceremony may still request a Silver Star Banner and it will be sent by mail.
