Meet the Lemont Police Canine Unit

Seniors from Lemont and the surrounding area are invited to a meeting of Seniors And Law enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.), to see a demonstration by the Lemont Police Department’s canine unit. The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the police department at 14600 127th St.

The police dog assists the police department in building searches, drug searches and the apprehension of individuals. Before his commission, the dog and his handler train for many weeks – and continue training to keep their skills active.

What is S.A.L.T.?

S.A.L.T., a cooperative effort between the Lemont Police Department, the Village of Lemont, Lemont Park District, Lemont Township, the Cook County Sheriff’s Department, local organizations  and Lemont citizens ages 55 and older, acts as an advisory group for the area’s law enforcement personnel. The council focuses on crime and security as related to seniors, discusses problems in the community and recommends programs that benefit area seniors.

Any interested citizen may attend S.A.L.T.’s monthly meetings and become a member of the council. Members become more informed about the criminal justice system, become part of a support/public relations group for law enforcement and help provide a channel for exchanging information between community seniors and law enforcement.

What is S.A.L.T.’s Purpose?

• To decrease crime and the fear of crime to raise the quality of life for local seniors.
• To increase and improve senior crime prevention and education. 
• To improve local law enforcement’s knowledge of the crime prevention needs of seniors. 
• To identify the concerns of local senior citizens. 
• To improve senior victim assistance. 
• To involve senior citizens in crime prevention and the educational efforts of S.A.L.T. and to raise community awareness of the issues.

What does S.A.L.T. do?

• Provides monthly programs on safety and health issues identified by seniors and police, such as telemarketing scams, identity theft, check fraud, personal and property security and more. 
• Develops training for officers on sensitivity issues with Alzheimer's patients encountered on the streets as lost or missing. 
• Creates, publishes and distributes brochures on elder abuse to raise awareness of issues and provide local support. 
• Joins Neighborhood Watch programs to address the specific concerns of seniors and their neighbors. 
• Helps with the Initial Response Program medical alert bracelets for seniors so first responders know medical history, medications and emergency contact information about them in case of emergency. 
• Develops in-town emergency telephone calling tree. 
• Helps with the Meals On Wheels program.
