Lemont Township Earth Day Nature Walk, Cleanup Set for April 26

Join the township as it takes care of its open space Saturday, April 26 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Lemont Township is looking for volunteers for its Earth Day event, planned for April 26. 

Volunteers will help with cleanup of the township's open space park, along with enjoying a nature walk and scavenger hunt for younger helpers. Residents are encouraged to arrive at the township office, 16300 Alba St. at 9 a.m. Before heading out on a nature walk and cleanup, a representative from Pizzo & Associates prairie management will detail the benefits of native plantings for common areas.

"This is in response to the growing concern for natural areas in subdivisions and demand for applicable education for their maintenance," according to a release from the township. Alternative residential gardening ideas will be presented, including:

  • How deep roots will stabilize slopes and reduce erosion. 
  • How to attract desirable species of birds and butterflies.
  • How to save time and money with less water requirements (rain gardens, rain barrels). 
  • How to improve water quality. 

The nature walk and clean-up is set to begin at 9:45 a.m. Scavenger hunt is scheduled for 10 a.m.
