Lemont Park District, S.A.L.T. Host First Senior Games

About 50 seniors swam, danced and played games Sunday morning at the CORE Fitness and Aquatic Complex.

Local advocacy group Seniors and Law Enforcement Together hosted the first ever Lemont Senior Games on Sunday at the .

About 50 seniors participated in the event, which was held at the , 16050 W. 127th St. Participants competed in a number of events, including swimming, running, dance, basketball, bean bags and contract bridge.

Awards were given to the top three athletes in each age category, and two lucky seniors won a free year of membership at the CORE, courtesy of the Lemont Park District Foundation.

On hand for the opening ceremony were Sen. Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), Lemont High School District 210 Superintendent Sandy Doebert, Lemont Fire Chief Carl Churulo, and Katie Walsh, director of senior services at the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

Also in attendance Sunday were S.A.L.T. Vice Chairperson Art Moreno and Treasurer Denise Bode, Lemont Park District Foundation members Gleen Pasiewicz and Bill Waligorski, State Rep. Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) and Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy.

With pom-poms in hand, S.A.L.T. committee members Debbie Schmitt and Monica Barichello joined Chairperson Jody Sternat for a special cheer to kick off the games.

S.A.L.T. is a cooperative effort of the , , Lemont Park District, , Cook County Sheriff, and community members ages 55 and up. The group focuses on crime and security issues that affect senior citizens.
