Lemont Library's Summer Reading Program Goes Medieval

Children are invited to celebrate the kickoff of a "Midsummer Knight's Read" at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the CORE.

The will join libraries across the state this summer as they encourage kids and adults to participate in a Medieval-themed reading program.

The Illinois Library Association chose "A Midsummer Knight's Read" as this year's them for its annual summer reading program, iRead. The program's mission, according to the ILA website, is "to provide high quality, low-cost resources and products that enable local library staff to motivate children, young adults and adults to read."

The Lemont Public Library, 50 E. Wend St., will kick off the summer program Tuesday with "A Festive Faire," which will feature stiltwalker and magician John Measner from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.  and a marionette adaptation of Rumplestiltskin at 6 p.m.

Though the event was originally scheduled to take place in the library's parking lot, it was moved to the , 16050 W. 127th St., due to excessive heat.

On Monday, 15-year-old Ann Baillie, 13-year-old John Tuzim and 11-year-old Michael Tuzim dressed in dragon suits and jester hats to promote the festival and reading program.

"It's a really cool program, and it's open to everyone from age 0 to 100," Baillie said. "The library has a lot of books selected, so it should be fun."

Michael Tuzim said the festival usually attracts a lot of young readers.

"We do it every summer—it's great," he said.

From June 7 to July 30, adults who submit a two-week log of the books they have read or listened to will receive a prize. Participants can also complete puzzles for more chances to win.

The children's program has three levels—Teen Read, Reading Revelers (ages 6-11) and Story Squires (ages 0-5).
