Lemont Junior Woman's Club Offers Safe Sitter Course

Aspiring babysitters ages 11-13 are encouraged to sign up for the class, which will take place March 9 and 16 at Lemont Safety Village.

Children don’t come with instructions. That's why the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club offers the Safe Sitter course for aspiring babysitters ages 11-13.

Registration is now under way for a class to be held Saturdays, March 9 and 16, at Lemont Safety Village, 55 Stephen St. The class runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. A $60 fee includes all course materials, lunch and snacks.

The practical class teaches everything from how to help a choking infant to personal safety for the sitter. Volunteers teaching the class are trained on the materials and curriculum. Medical experts volunteer their time to instruct in basic first aid, injury prevention and CPR training using infant and child-sized manikins.

Students also learn behavioral management techniques through role playing and practice with young children.

“As a safe sitter instructor, I feel confident when I hire a babysitter who has completed the program,” said Theresa Vasvery, a club member and mother of four children. “I know those babysitters are ready for anything.”
