Lemont Girl Scout Troop Collecting Used Toys, Books

Community members can drop off their donations at park district, library, through Jan. 25.

Did your New Year’s resolution include getting more organized? If you have been busy purging items from your closets, basements, attics and toy rooms, Lemont Girl Scout Troop 361 has found a place for all the books and toys your kids may have outgrown.

The troop, made up of 8- and 9-year-old girls who attend River Valley School, is conducting a used book and toy drive through Friday, Jan. 25 to benefit the Toy Box Connection in Orland Park.

The girls have already collected more than 300 toys, books and stuffed animals simply by cleaning out their own closets and asking friends for donations. And they’re hoping members of the community will do the same.

Girl ScoutTroop 361 is also collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House charities. Residents may place bagged donations of aluminum pop tabs in the donation bins.

“Because Girl Scouts is a service-based organization, we wanted to give back and be a part of a service project that our Brownie Girl Scouts could easily relate to – toys,” said troop leader Mary Tulipano. “The work involved with this community service project will reinforce what we are learning for our Philanthropy and Giving Back badges.”
