Lemont Girl Scout Sock Drive Tops Expectations

Troop 259 from River Valley School collected nearly 1,500 pairs of socks to donate to local families in need.

Lemont Girl Scout Troop 259, third-grade brownies from River Valley School, collected more than 900 pairs of mittens from generous members of the community last year – and hoped to top that total in socks this year.

The girls not only met their goal of 900 - they ended up with 1,482 pairs of socks for Lemont families in need.

“I am truly blown away by all the hard work these girls put into it,” said troop leader Robyn Horn. “They stood outside in the cold at Walgreens for hours soliciting our community. They had drop boxes in town, and then added more on their own. They asked for donations from family and friends, even asking for donations instead of Halloween candy from their grandparents. They are such a great group of girls that they were more than excited when they heard their total.”

Since mid-September, the girls collected new men’s socks, women’s socks, kid’s socks, baby socks, sport socks, dress socks, even silly socks, from members of the community.

“We try to show these girls what a great town we live in and how we all need to put in our fair share, especially when others are not able to,” said Horn. “To see their faces when we dumped almost 1,500 pairs of socks in their laps, was priceless,”

“I am so overwhelmed with the generosity of this town,” Horn continued. “Every time we do a drive, or a family has an unforeseen circumstance, the community truly rallies behind them. I have never seen anything like it. It amazes me every time. Everyone we met was very willing to help out these special families who need it most, and also just help this group of girls succeed and reach their goal.”

Horn also thanked local businesses who helped the Girl Scouts by displaying sock drop boxes for more than a month: MB Financial Bank, The CORE, Chipain's Fresh Market and the Lemont Public Library, and Walgreens, where the Girl Scouts were given permission to solicit socks outside the store.

“I was also very pleased to see Happy Hands (Methodist Preschool in Lemont) jump on board this year,” Horn said. “We have a lot of their alumni in our little troop and they were more than happy to contact us to see if they could be a drop box location. Honestly, I love this town.”
