Historical Society Exhibit Commemorates Girl Scouts' 100th Anniversary

The Lemont Area Historical Society, 306 Lemont St., recently opened a new exhibit featuring Girl Scout photos, uniforms, dolls and other artifacts.

A new exhibit honoring the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America is now on display at the .

Girl Scouts across the country have been celebrating the anniversary throughout the year with special events and ceremonies. In the Chicago area, many small exhibits have been created to showcase the history of local Girl Scout troops.

The Lemont exhibit was curated by Romeoville resident Nancy Hackett, who has been a Girl Scout for 62 years, 52 as an adult volunteer. She has put together similar displays in Lockport, Plainfield, Joliet, Romeoville and Bolingbrook.

Local troops have been given "passbooks" that can be stamped at each exhibit the girls visit. Badges are available to purchase once the Scouts have enough stamps.

The project was a perfect fit for Hackett, who heads up the Romeoville Area Historical Society.

"The historians in the area got together last spring to find locations for these exhibits," Hackett said. "The idea is to celebrate the history of the Girl Scouts and teach current members about the organization's past."

Among the items on display in Lemont: figurines and dolls from the 1960s, photographs, posters, badges, pins, and uniforms from the 1960s and 1980s.

"Many of the items on display come from local Girl Scouts in Lemont or Lockport," Hackett said.

Sue Donahue, the Lemont Historical Society's museum coordinator, said the exhibit has been a welcome addition.

"We've been looking forward to this exhibit since earlier this year," she said. "We expect the local troops will stop by, but we're also hoping to attract Girl Scouts from nearby towns."

Those that visit the Historical Society display are also invited to share their memories of Girl Scouts for a special album. Forms are available at the museum.

The Lemont Historical Society's museum, located at 306 Lemont St., is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
