Travel back in time and celebrate the holidays at a couple of upcoming events at the Lemont Area Historical Society at 306 Lemont Street.
Titanic exhibit, presentation
The historical society will unveil its new exhibit on the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27.
David Bart of the Antique Wireless Association will recount the events of April 14 and 15, 1912 - the dates of the worst disaster in maritime history – the sinking of the “unsinkable” luxury liner, the RMS Titanic.
Bart’s presentation will focus on the critical role of radio communication during the event, and acquaint audience members with radio operators Jack Phillips and Harold Bride, crew members aboard the ill-fated ship, Titanic. Bart will also explore the monumental impact of radio communication both during and following the disaster.
The historical society is inviting the public to join in on a fascinating look into history and a “tasting” of the final meal served aboard the Titanic.
Holiday Open House
Get in the Christmas spirit at the Lemont Area Historical Society’s open house and homemade cookie sale from 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at 306 Lemont St.
Guests of all ages will enjoy the music of the season, sung by the choirs of St. Patrick and St. Alphonsus churches, from 1:30-3 p.m. (Doors open at 1 p.m.)
From 3-4 p.m., kids can tell Santa what they want for Christmas and have their photos taken with the Jolly Old Elf next to the Victorian Christmas tree.
And, last but certainly not least – guests can pick up some delicious assortments of homemade holiday cookies, which will be available for purchase at the holiday open house.
