Franciscan Village Ends Tradition of Live Nativity

A longtime Lemont tradition will not be held this year, due to construction at the facility. It will not take place in years to come, either.

A beloved Lemont event will not be held this year, or in years to come.

The Live Nativity hosted by Franciscan Village in Lemont will not take place this year, as the facility is undergoing major upgrades that make it impossible to accommodate the camels, miniature donkey, sheep, lamb and goats used in the show.

The facility's entire lower level is being renovated, and construction on-site makes it too risky for the organizers to hold regular events, such as the nativity and "Cookies with Santa" event. Once upgrades at Franciscan Village are complete, additional construction will begin at Mother Theresa Home.

The live nativity of 2012 was the last, as organizers have discontinued the tradition. However, they plan to offer different events and activities in years to come.

"We were 25 years old," said Judy Horka, Director of Life Enrichment at Franciscan Village. "We needed a little facelift."
