'Denim Derby' Raises $10K for Lemont Junior Woman's Club

The club held a Kentucky Derby-themed fundraiser Friday, May 4, at the Lithuanian World Center.

The Lemont Junior Woman's Club raised more than $10,000 for the community Friday with its first ever Denim Derby fundraiser.

Held at the , 14911 E. 127th St., the night before the 138th Kentucky Derby, the event featured horse racing, Derby pies, sweet tea and fabulous hats.

“It was such a fun evening. The woman really embraced the hat competition, and the hats made for great conversation pieces,” said event organizer Brenda Douglass. “We are so pleased the community continues to support the work of our club, and we are proud of the difference we make in our community.”

Money raised at the Denim Derby will go toward the club’s numerous community support efforts, including financial support of the Lemont Food Pantries, Christmas and birthday gifts for children in need, college scholarships and safety programs for children.

Now in its 19th year, the Lemont Junior Woman's Club—which consists of about 80 members who volunteer more than 7,000 service hours annually—is focused not only on its numerous philanthropic goals but on creating opportunities for Lemont women to build friendships with each other.

Besides the Denim Derby, another new endeavor the club is taking on this year is brainstorming a new long-term community project. that the club is currently in the beginning stages of researching an idea to build an interactive, natural “play-scape” area near the head of a biking and walking trail near downtown Lemont.
