Argonne Celebrates 30 Years of Parallel Computing

Argonne this week hosted a 30 years of parallel computing symposium, and this summer will also offer an extreme-scale computing training program to be held in late July

As the week comes to a close, I wanted to let you know about a few notable items of interest at Argonne.

This week we hosted a two-day symposium that celebrated 30 years of parallel computing. The event was attended by many of the visionaries at the lab and from other institutions who over the years have contributed to Argonne’s storied history of advancing parallel computing and computational science. Others in attendance included industry innovators from corporations such as Microsoft, IBM Research, Intel Labs and Hewlett Packard, among others.

Looking back in time, 30 years ago researchers at Argonne established the lab’s first experimental parallel computing facility. Today, high-performance computing has become essential to virtually all science and engineering, and Argonne houses one of the fastest parallel machines in the world in support of scientific discovery.  You can read more about our efforts in parallel computing over the years here.

Also on the topic of computing, the Argonne Training Program on Extreme-Scale Computing (ATPESC) will be taking place from July 28-August 9. This is a two-week program that fills the gap that exists in the training computational scientists typically receive through formal education or other shorter courses.

There is currently a critical need for specialized, in-depth training for the computational scientists poised to facilitate breakthrough science and engineering using today's most powerful computers such as our Mira supercomputer, currently the 4th fastest in the world, and this course addresses those needs.  Applications for this comprehensive and hands-on training program are now being accepted through May 22.
