Swallow Cliff Chapter DAR Celebrates Constitution Week

Swallow Cliff Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, found several ways to commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution 226 years ago. In 1956, Congress declared September 17 as Constitution Day, and due to petitioning by the National DAR, Congress agreed to set aside September 17-23 annually as Constitution Week. Swallow Cliff Constitution Week Chairman Susan Snow created displays at the Palos Heights Public Library and at the Palos Park Public Library. She also traveled to other DAR chapters to give presentations on the Constitution. To kick off Constitution Week, Swallow Cliff members participated in Bells Across America by ringing any type of bell at 3:00 P.M. on September 17, to coordinate with other bells being rung all over America at that exact moment. At their September meeting, members recited the Preamble to the Constitution. The program featured Shepard high School history teacher Gina Hanna, who presented little known facts about the Constitution and details about the uniqueness of this lasting document as the framework for our government and as a model for others.
