On April 23, at the Lockport Township East High School, ComEd will host an open house regarding a project to address the increasing power needs of the Lockport, Homer Glen, New Lenox and unincorporated Will County areas.  

ComEd forecasts that beyond 2014, economic growth and associated increase in demand for electricity in the area will exceed the current infrastructure’s capacity for the area.  This requires investments in the transmission system to sustain and support economic growth in the
community.

ComEd is proposing to construct a new substation at 167^th Street and I-355 and install a new 138-kilovolt, transmission line to run north along I-355 to an existing ComEd right-of-way a little north of 135^th.

The benefits of the new substation and transmission line include:

Increase Capacity to Serve New Customers - The new
distribution sub station will support the area’s future commercial and residential growth.

Improve Service Reliability to Existing Customers - Increased area capacity to handle future growth ComEd identified a need for this capacity expansion for the rapidly growing northeastern Will County region back in the 1990’s and purchased property at 167th Street and I-355 for use as a possible future substation site.  To minimize any impact on area residents, the site had the added benefit of being located next to the then proposed (and now built) I-355 extension.

ComEd representatives will discuss timing, and why this project is important to the future economic development of the area.
