Each week, we'll feature a whiz kid, club or group from Lemont

Each week, Lemont Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.

We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.  Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to Local Editor Amanda Luevano at amanda@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the information included below.

Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: Ciara skates for a synchronized skating team called the Dazzlers, which skates out of the Downers Grove Ice Area for the DuPage Figure Skating Club. On Feb. 5, the Dazzlers won first place at the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships for the Midwest Region in Rochester, Minn. They skated against 32 other teams across the Midwest in the Open Juvenile division.

In addition to this achievement, Ciara and one other teammate were given the honor of standing on the podium to represent her team in the awards ceremony.

Ciara is also a member of the Lemont High School freshman poms squad and the Lemont Juniorettes.

Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness: Ciara's mom, Debby Athy, said her daughter is extremely committed to her team. She has been skating since she was 4 years old and practices four days a week, even making time to skate before school.

According to Debby, "Synchronized skating is becoming a popular discipline both within U.S. figure skating and around the world. Synchronized skating is a team sport in which anywhere from eight to 20 skaters perform a program together. It uses the same judging system as singles, pairs and dance, and is characterized by teamwork, speed, intricate formations and challenging step sequences."
