Whiz Kids: Girl Scout Troop 70591
The Lemont fifth-graders volunteered their time last month at Central School, where they cleaned up a community playground.
Each week, Lemont Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.
We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to Local Editor Amanda Luevano at amanda@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the information included below.
And without further ado, this week's Whiz Kids are...
Girl Scout Troop 70591
Names: Melanie LeBeck, Kendra Anifer, Emma Lochen, Angela Marseille, Julianne McClatchy, Aubrey Carter, Megan Kerrigan, Abbie Griffin, Maggie Yavarski, Genna Yavarski, Hannah Sliwa, Arielle Lyon, Maria Purpura
School: Old Quarry Middle School
Accomplishment: On Friday, Aug. 19, the Girl Scouts of Lemont Troop 70519 spent their last day of summer vacation volunteering at the now closed Central School. There, they spent four hours in 85-degree weather pulling weeks, clearing ground and disposing of debris at a nearby playground.
Keys to Awesomeness: Troop Co-Leader Maryla Bachleda-Sliwa describes the girls as "young, dedicated, and true 'Lemonters.'" The playground had been taken over by weeds and high grass, but is now able to be used again thanks to the girls' efforts.
