What’s Being Built at Archer and 135th?

The Will County Highway Department is making improvements to 135th Street.

Lemont Patch readers have been asking, “What’s  being built at the corner of Archer Avenue (Route 171) and 135th Street, across from Kohl’s and Target? Is it a shopping center, restaurant, gym – or even a movie theater?”

The answer is: none of the above.

James Brown, the Village of Lemont's Planning and Economic Development Director, said the construction is part of a road-widening project that's outside Lemont's jurisdiction.

The project is actually in Homer Township in Will County. According to George Catalano, assistant county engineer for Will County, the project involves realigning 135th Street  to feed into Archer Avenue (Route 171) at a 90-degree angle.

The estimated $3.4 million project will include creation of a detention basin, realignment of the creekbed of Long Run Creek and raising the profile of 135th Street, the engineer said.

Once completed, 135th Street will include four lanes with a median and curb and gutter. Depending on the weather, Catalano estimates the construction project will be completed by next fall.

Will this improvement also include the installation of a traffic signal? The stated improvements indicate an anticipated increase in traffic volume that can only make an already dangerous intersection an even greater concern.

According to previous comments on other subjects like getting more business into Lemont, there is no major traffic going into Lemont . So , why the need for a traffic light ? Heaven forbid we have some other major box store or theatre or restaurant in that area . Oh wait , that's right Lemont doesn't have enough traffic to sustain stores ets like that . You people know who I'm talking about !

Annual average daily traffic through that area is 12700 vehiclesOn Archer (in 2009) and 7400 on 135th (in 2008) and 9500 on state street (in 2010)

A tad far from none.

Now that is research Lemont developers n planners should look at ! I've always believed there is enough traffic flow through Lemont to support more stores etc. At least , to open more business in the closed areas . Any word on that Lemont planning commission ?
Also, Romney still ahead in polls !
