Two Lemont Teens Accused of Residential Burglary in Unincorporated Downers Grove
Christopher G. Forzley and Jacob G. Carpenter were charged Tuesday with felony counts of burglary and residential burglary, according to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office.
Two Lemont teens were charged Tuesday with burglarizing a home in unincorporated Downers Grove, according to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office.
Christopher G. Forzley, 17, of the 19W600 block of Hillcrest Drive, and Jacob G. Carpenter, 18, of the 800 block of Main Street, were each charged with one count of residential burglary, a Class 1 felony, and one count of burglary, a Class 2 felony, police said.
Police said they received a call around 5 a.m. Tuesday of a possible residential burglary near Farmingdale Village, located south of 87th Street and east of I-355 in unincorporated Downers Grove.
Deputies responded and found two suspicious men in the area, police said. When approached, the men fled on foot. Deputies searched the area, located the two suspects and took them into custody.
The Woodridge Police Department assisted in the arrests.
Police said they received additional calls of burglary to motor vehicles in the area where the suspects were apprehended. Sheriff’s detectives are continuing the investigation, but said the suspects are reportedly responsible for multiple car burglaries that occurred in the area in the early morning hours.
Additional charges may be pending, police said.
Both men are currently being held on bond. Forzley's bond was set at $25,000 and Carpenter's bond was set at $10,000, according to police.

I was fortunate to teach at LHS, and I can tell you that our future is in great hands. Every day, I saw students involved in clubs, sports, activities, tutoring in the writing center, and volunteering their time in countless ways to many different community organizations. Yes, some teenagers sometimes make poor decisions because that is a part of the growing process, and brain research has actually proven that the decision-making part of the brain isn't even fully developed until people are in their twenties. However, I witnessed intelligent, focused young people accomplishing amazing things every day that I walked into that building. This generation is more compassionate and tolerant than my own. I do not worry about their capacity to lead.

RULE 1: Life is not fair!! Get used to it.
RULE 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
RULE 3: You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school.
You won't be a vice president with a car phone, until you earn both.
RULE 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure.

RULE 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now.
They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
RULE 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
RULE 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

Dear Christian God,
why do you allow so much child rape in churches? Also, due to your alleged omniscience and omnipresence, how could any law passed regarding the separation of church and state keep you out of any public school anyway? Do laws affect you like running water allegedly affects Draculas? If we revoke the separation of church and state in the United States will all teenagers become sparkly and whiney like in that stupid vampire movie teenagers like? I think there are more teenagers that have read Twilight than The Bible by the way. Please don't allow them to become sparkly. That would be super annoying and we don't want any trouble with Blade in Lemont.

I'm sad for their parents. Having said that I want a remedy for these kinds of offenses. I think every community ought to have a "Community Task Manager" who is an employee of the Park District. His/her sole job will be to recieve work requests from senior citizens in the community who need a hand and from *all* governmental bodies who have increments of work...of any kind, that these offenders can perform. Sentence them to communtiy labor of a certain number of days and make them report daiily to the Community Task Manager. Make them wear a special; colored uniform so all can know their shame and punishment. This is cheaper than running them through the court system and jails and the like and does the community some good. This program is not for criminal offenders but rather those of "I did a stupid thing" variety and need to pay back society in some meaningful way.

It doesn't matter what their character is, or how nice they are, or whether their parents are upstanding citizens (or the opposite).
The fact is that breaking and entering is a very serious crime that comes with a very serious consequence. Entering ones home, with the intent to steal, knowing that it is 5am and the owners are likely home puts everyone in quite a predicament.
They deserve the toughest sentence for their crime- with the hope that they will not reoffend when they are released into the free world. We all were young at one point, but we know that at 5am you don't break into random houses.
Let's stop making excuses for their behavior, and focus on KEEPING OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE. Lemont and Downers Grove Township's streets just got a little safer now that these two are in jail.

These 2 are nothing but trouble.Always have been, always will be. The parents do NOT give a damn about them, especially Forzley.Every day for almost a year, I would see Forzleys parents dropping him off or picking him up at that "drug house" on Timberline dr.where he and the residents of that house would be constantly getting in trouble with the police going there because of something this happy little group did.Forzley and his buddies would be out on school nights till 10 or 10:30 when daddy or mommy would come to Timberline and pick him up. Are you kidding?? He would be there most of the time from 2 or 3 in the afternoon till 10:30 at night, usually 7 days a week. I think the parents dropped him there just so they wouldn't have to deal with him. I'm sure with all this time put in studying,he was probably a genius at school too. No people, DO NOT feel even the slightest bit sorry for these 2 bozos. They brought EVERYTHING they are getting now, upon themselves. When you lay down with dogs, you get fleas, and these 2 must be sleeping in a kennel. When punks like this get in trouble, they should fine the punk AND the parent. Also, give community service to both. This just might encourage the parent to take more interest in who their kids are hanging around with and what they are doing.

IF these two are guilty, I offer no compassion as I have had my car burglarized twice in the last year in the same area they supposedly where they were stealing.
A lot of people have commented that they made "one bad decision for five seconds" and that that will ruin thier life. It appears that MULTIPLE burglaries occurred over many days and that the pair was escalating to residential burglary from car burglary.
I will do my best to help the police apprehend whoever stole from my vehicle, if it turns out it was these two, they need to be taught a lesson, getting away with it only made them bolder.

I really hope these two kids receive (if guilty) rehabilitation and are not just thrown to the wolves in crime school (prison). I'd much rather see them ten years from now with decent jobs, paying taxes, and mowing their lawn. I remember when I was 18 and it is through some amount of luck that I did not end up a different person. I didn't realize it then, but I had a support system that helped me. I hope these two have the same and would offer my own time to help if it were possible.
That said, I sympathize greatly with the people who were robbed/violated. It's a terrible feeling. If there are items they cannot afford to replace and did not get back, I'd rather see all of us in the community get together to help. We should concentrate more on the victim's state than on the pre-supposed guilt of the perpetrators.

I've been reading this posts and I cannot believe what I'm reading. "These boys have rough lives," "These boys are really good kids, they just made a bad decision." Let me tell you something people- These boys, young men, whatever you want to call them, need to be held accountable for their actions. Regardless of what environmental influences they've encountered, ultimately, THEY made a choice. In life, we have that ability and we must deal with the consequences of our actions. Getting caught might be JUST what these boys need to wake up and get their acts together. Without serious consequences, they are likely to repeat this negative behavior. That would be child-rearing 101.
Further, this kind of lawless behavior by the teens of this community just cannot be tolerated. To do so is to resign ourselves to continued burglaries and even worse.
Just in the last month or so on a street in Covington Knolls, there were TWO incidences of items (landscaping bricks and a battery for a power wheels vehicle) THROWN through windows at 4:30/5 in the morning. There are small children and other people in those homes that could have been injured. Do you think that the criminals (yes, criminals) that did those things were thinking about the people whose homes they were destroying? Doubt it. This has got to stop and we need to come together as a community and say "NO MORE."

Unless this town starts addressing the real issues, nothing will change. Bottom line, (like it or not), Lemont has an alcohol, heroin and marijuana problem. I wonder if this particular incident happened in Lemont, would it even be reported? Because this incident happened in DuPage county, we are hearing about it. I have heard about many more incidents like this tied to drugs and alcohol in Lemont that the public never hears about. Until this town figures out we have real issues and aren't the perfect little town people make it out to be, more trouble lies ahead.
Spencer D. Smith
2:20 pm on Wednesday, August 15, 2012
Ann, what do you propose we do to address these "real issues" that have affected every society, every country, every state, every city, and every town ever in the history of time?
Drugs are already illegal. Alcohol is regulated. Neither of which are very hard to procure whether they're illegal or not. We tried prohibition of alcohol once upon a time. Didn't work. Nor is the current "war on drugs" unless you count all the cash we throw at it as a success.
So once again, how do we address some kids being jerkstores? Crime is not a new concept. It has actually gone down in the past decade.
This town was never a perfect peaceful little town and it never will be. Neither will any other town that claims as such in the entire world.

Ann, you're totally right. Having been victimized by crimes several times in Lemont, they don't get reported if the kids are underage, and the police dismiss graffiti as "a relative visiting" or as "kid stuff." I saw a drug deal go down in Chipain's lot (and called the police). We need to open our eyes, demand that our police take these things seriously, parent our own kids, and make friends with the neighbor kids. That, Spencer, is at least a step in the right direction.

Anne,
I agree. We just cannot realistically or logistically expect the police to be everywhere all the time. Nor do I think everything should be addressed by ruining some poor kid's life because he drank underage or experimented with drugs. Getting to know your neighbors and your neighbor's kids is certainly a great step and seemingly, to me, an obvious one. I don't know about other parents, but in my house, my daughter is REQUIRED to have me as a friend on facebook and not have me blocked in any way. That said, being able to monitor that sort of thing comes easy to me as it is part of my profession. Being able to keep a pulse on her and her friend's activities through facebook is a huge advantage.
If there are other parents that need help with setting up restrictions, monitoring, or guidelines in their household, should contact me. I'm happy to help.

Ann Paul - you are absolutely correct. Lemont has hidden its dirty little secrets for quite some time. A major part of the problem is the parents who feel that they can do whatever they want, when they want, and instill the same attitude in their kids. The two little brats involved in this incident deserve to spend some time in jail - they committed one of the most dangerous crimes possible, both for themselves and the homeowner. What if they broke into a home with a teenaged girl home alone, or senior citizens unable to defend themselves??? What might have happened then??
What if the homeowner had shot one or both - as is his right?? We need to quit patronizing the morons who make the law abiding majority of youth in Lemont look bad - both the kids and their "in denial" parents. Stop the "my kid isn't a criminal he just made a bad decision" nonsense and make them understand that there are very real consequences for their actions. Until they are willing to accept that proposition, they will never be able to be part of a civilized society.
Oh BTW, it's interesting to see so many posts citing the principle of "innocent until proven guilty"- that same sentiment doesn't seem to prevail in the comments to developments in the Drew Peterson trial....go figure.

Not sure why we are pointing fingers at the parents. I've known plenty of kids with siblings that were troublemakers as kids and criminals as adults. These same kids grew up to be decent people with good jobs. Their parents were fine. Some people are just bad. They may be stupid, they may be addled by drugs, they may be susceptible to peer pressure. Who knows. We shouldn't be judging others for "screwing up their kids" when in fact, we have no idea what they may or may not have done.

Wow. Let's be a little more compassionate and forgiving. Let's show a little sensitivity to the victims. My house was burglarized in Lemont THREE times by the same kid before we caught him (neither of these two young men). It's tough to have your home violated. When we were dealing with it, there were so many complicated emotions: hurt, fear, anger, hate, despair, bewilderment, compassion, pity. Of course those of you who have not been through a similar experience have a right to your feelings, but I'm confused why so many of you are so quick to judge harshly. It's not your place to do so, you're not showing any sensitivity to the victims, let alone the perpetrators and their families, and you're certainly not helping this specific incident or the larger societal problem.

Yes, Michael, our next door neighbor teenager did. It didn't make the blotter because he was underage. We moved 5 blocks because of it. He was after drug money. He got it the first time and not the other two times. Trashed our house the second two times. First time broke in through my KIDS' window, next time he unhinged our cellar door and kicked the door in the basement. Third time I came home from my kids' doctor's appt while he was still in the house. He left when he heard us, but the police brought the K9 unit. Chief Shaughnessy got to be good friends with us because we put up our own security cameras to catch him the third time. Yes this happened in Lemont. Keep your insults to yourself until it happens to you, and don't tell me this doesn't happen in Lemont.

You know it amazes me how much people are one minded. Give me a break, who on here honestly this whole time really took time to look at some of these comments. Here's where the problem is, whether you want to hear it or not. When I see people's comments like (Lauren Williamson) saying "let's focus on ways to help our community guide younger people". That's the reason things are messed up now, because we just focus on "our" community or "our" town or "our" city or whatever. Instead of focusing on what we can do to help around the country. You can't honestly think that by puting up a picture of you smiling and wearing a suit is going to have an effect visually or mentally did you? You want to guide me to give ideas or thoughts to so you can help "our" communities youth? Give me a break, our whole lives growing up we have been told to pick our friends wisely have we not? Or when you get to highschool you should play a sport so you can be cool. Join plays so you can look talented, be a cheerleader so you can be popular. My point is helping guide the youth doesn't mean anything if you can't see the bigger picture. That's like a president saying he's only going to help out 35 out of the 50 states. Or fixing a leak with putty, eventually your going to have to properly fix the pipe itself.

Let's face it, if you were fortunate enough to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth like I was. Then I have no room to give judgments on someone who lives in Lemont, IL or the Boonies. Because I don't know what someone is going through personally or mentally in their mind to make them do things like burglary or theft. I'm not saying that people with money don't steal. All I'm trying to say is if you have never been in their shoes. Then don't leave a comment judging them. I've heard of an 11 year old girl stealing stuff from a market so she can feed her her hungry little 7 year old brother and their mom who was very sick from pretty much being homeless. Would you call that little girl a scumbag, or would you say her mother did not raise her right? Wow!, its so shocking when you actually lift your head up and look outside the box for once right? At the end of the day people will choose to do things regardless of the consequences. All I'm saying is who am I to judge why they do it. @RechroMusic

I agree everyone's probably done something stupid growing up....but not to that magnitude. Swiping a street sign or hurling an egg at a car isn't the same level as burglary. But I hope you've learned a lesson as you stated and that you both can turn things around. There's still plenty of time to lead a great life and I hope it works out. Twenty years from now, I hope you've done something to make your parents proud - good luck!

Probably not the best idea to insult the very people of the town who you have robbed, because let me tell you something I'm sure we're all feeling, if you robbed one house, it could just as well have been any one of our houses. We all feel violated.
To have you, an admitted burglar, now have the gall to call us worthless and shame us for having productive lives that may involve having us be in front of a computer is just plain insulting.
I am not attacking you. Just giving advice. If you read some of my other comments, you will see that I am one of the more compassionate people towards your situation

Chris, just some more advice. Your lawyer would probably strongly advise against you having any communication regarding your case whether in person and especially written on the net. Paul,
Nothing Mary said could be considered "dangerous" in any sense of the word. I'm sure Mary wasn't an angel, but I'm betting she didn't break into people's houses to rob them either.
Heck, I can say with authority that I certainly was not an angel, yet there was always a line that I would never, ever cross. Breaking into a house to rip people off was definitely one of them.

Why is it that these burglaries and related trouble/crimes happening in our area DG are usually caused or have teens and others from Lemont? I don't read the Lemont papers but is it the same problem that Lemont crimes are caused by teens/others from DG? No one is perfect but come on we need to be more watchful. Let's get patrols increased and these crimes prevented. Maybe Mayor Tully and the Council can get the Police contract settled and then discuss adding some Police? If the contract finally got settled let's Police off radar stations behind buildings and driving around town.

Are you aware of how rare it is for police to actually catch a perpetrator in the act of a crime? You could add 10 policemen to LPD and there will still be crime simply because even with a few more patrols, they can't be everywhere. The only thing that WILL happen if such a solution was implemented is that there would be a lot more petty tickets written to justify the new officer's time.

To all "doers of stupid things" like breaking into someones home for a few lousy bucks you "would do anything for" except work. In times past burgulars had some pride and one could rightly assume they would just rob you! These days they may be drug crazed or so twistred in their thinking and value system that they will just as easily kill you, rape your wife or do something as unthinkable. The home owner these days *has to assume the worst* if he is to survive. He doesn't know you! It's not money or stuff he wories about...it's his and his loved ones life! It comes down to a simple case of it's you or him. After the trigger is pulled I'm sure we will all hear how "he was a good boy". An old saying...make me choose, you loose comes to mind. There is no such thing as a simple theft anymore. It has become more complicated and kids who are prone to doing "stupid things" need to really ask themselves if it is worth it. It is a very risky endeavour, I don't mean to pick on these two young men but post hoping any young people reading this understand where the homeowner is coming from. Is the reward worth the risk? I think not.
