Lemont High School Honors Students of the Month
Each month, LHS recognizes a student from each grade level for hard work and dedication to the school and the community. Selections rotate among the school’s various departments from month to month.
Four Lemont High School students were recognized as December Students of the Month at the district’s Board of Education meeting Dec. 17. The honorees are senior Esperanza Aleman (Social Studies), junior Bethany Timm (Learning Resource Center), sophomore Christine Martinez (English) and freshman Misbah Chagpar (Industrial Technology).
Esperanza Aleman, Senior, Social Studies
The Social Studies Department chose Esperanza Aleman as Senior Student of the Month.
Esperanza has earned high honor roll honors during her academic career - and her favorite class is the Certified Nursing Assistant program in which she’s enrolled at the Wilco Area Career Center.
Esperanza’s teachers note that she is a genuine individual whose commitment and character shape her contagiously positive outlook on life. Her classmates look to her as a leader out of respect for her abilities, and she raises the standard of class discussions and instruction to a higher level.
She also has earned student of the month honors at Wilco, and is a member of the school’s technical honor society. Esperanza plans to attend college and ultimately become a registered nurse. In her spare time, she works part-time at the Lemon Tree restaurant.
Bethany Timm, Junior, Learning Resource Center
Bethany Timm was named Junior Student of the Month by the Learning Resource Center. An honor roll student, Bethany cites Human Rights & World Affairs, Sociology and English III Honors as her favorite classes.
An avid user of the Learning Resource Center who visits the LRC nearly every day, Bethany regularly inquires about special projects and is willing to lend a hand as a volunteer. She is in her third year as a member of the speech team, and also is a member of the photography club.
In college, she plans to major in social services and minor in photography. She someday hopes to participate in overseas missions.
A staff member of Lemont’s new Goodwill Store, Bethany also serves as a barista at her church’s coffee shop. She enjoys reading, scrapbooking and photography in her spare time.
Christine Martinez, Sophomore, English
The English department chose Christine Martinez as the Sophomore Student of the Month. Christine is a high honor roll performer whose interest in science makes Physics her favorite course this semester.
Christine’s teachers note that she works very hard and continues to work until she is 100 percent satisfied with her effort. She overcomes obstacles to reach her goals and always is prepared to tackle difficult tasks.
A member of the foreign language club, Christine also is involved with Interact. She not only takes part in community service, but is helpful to teachers and her classmates. She is working toward attending a four-year college and plans on becoming an ultrasound technician.
An accomplished and award-winning ballet dancer. Christine holds a part-time job as a babysitter.
Misbah Chagpar, Freshman, Industrial Technology
Misbah Chagpar was selected as the Freshman Student of the Month by the Industrial Technology Department. She has distinguished herself as a student who is serious about her education. Misbah cites Exploring Technology, Accelerated Geometry Honors and Biology Honors as her favorite courses.
Her teachers note that she has a natural curiosity to find out how and why things work, which helps her to solve challenging problems. Misbah played on the girls’ tennis team in the fall, is a member of the Mathletes squad and involved in Future Business Leaders of America.
Misbah plans to pursue a career teaching math, science or technology.
The youngest black belt in Lemont Park District history, Misbah teaches karate to lower belts and also enjoys television and spending time with family and friends.
About the Student of the Month program
Thirty-two students earn Student of the Month accolades each school year, with four individuals honored each month from October through May. Students may be selected for this prestigious honor only once in their careers at Lemont High School.
Local businessman Brad Grcevic of Edward Jones Inc. in Lemont contributes a donation each month to a charity selected by the Student of the Month award winners. This month’s winners selected Hope and Friendship Ministries to receive the donation.
An archive of previous “Student of the Month” winners may be found under the Academics tab on the district’s Web site at www.lhs210.net.
