A Lemont Girl Scout troop is collecting books throughout June to benefit elementary school teachers in Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A.
According to troop leader Joan Zych, the drive was prompted by the district's recently adopted reorganizational plan, which will close Central School and shift many teachers to the Oakwood/River Valley campus.
"With close to a dozen teachers changing grade levels next year, they will need these independent reading books for their in-class libraries at their new grade levels," Zych said.
Personal class libraries are even more important with the increased class sizes in District 113A, she added.
"Teachers are responsible for purchasing many of their classroom supplies and if folks in Lemont have books that their child is no longer reading, we are asking them to donate the books to the Girl Scouts' book drive to help both the students and the teachers," she said. "Every single book will make a difference to someone"
