This is so nice of the Girl Scouts to do, but I have a question. What happens to all of the books in the Central LRC? Can't District 113a distribute those books among the teachers going to Oakwood and River Valley?

Hi Lori, I am a teacher moving from Central 3rd grade to Old Quarry 5th grade. The books in Central's library belong to the school district. The books that teachers use in their own classroom libraries that support the leveled reading program are purchased with our own money or have been donated by parents. I've invested heavily over the years to support a wide variety of readers stemming from the average third grader, a small selection of lower and a small selection of higher reading leveled text. We've leveled our classroom libraries and are there for students to gain easy access to literature without waiting for the next checkout. As it stood this last year, students were able to checkout one book per week from the district library at Central. Depending on the reader, the text, and the option to read at home, some students finished books daily and others over days or weeks.

Classroom libraries do not have access to the student checkout system that the district library uses. Teachers are responsible for any materials checked out to them. If the district distributed books to my classroom checked out under my name, I would be responsible to pay for any books that were lost. Without a book checkout system for each classroom each day, it would be impossible for me to monitor who was reading and/or returning district books. For the Girl Scouts to recognized the value of having books in the classroom goes to show how much the students appreciate the variety of literature that has been available for them through their teachers and parents who contribute. Moving from 3rd to 5th, I’ve handed down my lowest levels to a teacher moving from 3rd to 1st, and visa-versa, but certainly not enough for the changes in levels for the number of students we are servicing.
