Kohl’s Adding Charging Stations for Electric Cars

Drivers can charge their purchases – and their vehicles – while shopping at the department store.

Kohl’s Department Stores has announced the expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) charging station initiative by adding a total of 36 new EV stations at 18 Kohl’s locations by the end of fall 2012. The expansion will take place in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin as well as to the company’s existing EV program in Texas.

Since Kohl’s began its EV charging program in Illinois last December, the company has added two stations each at the store at 13440 S. Archer Ave. in Lemont, as well as at stores in Romeoville and Crete.

The department store has partnered with the energy company ECOtality to install 30 EV charging stations at Kohl’s locations in Illinois, Wisconsin and Texas – and with Duke Energy and ChargePoint at other stores across the country.

Once expansion of the program is complete, Kohl’s shoppers will be able to take advantage of a total of 101 EV charging stations at 52 of its locations across 14 states.

Shoppers who drive their electric vehicles to participating Kohl’s can activate the charging stations free of charge through radio frequency identifications cards available at the store’s customer service desk and via phone numbers displayed on the charging stations.

The EV charging stations are part of the company’s “Kohl’s Cares” effort.

“Since Kohl’s EV charging station initiative began in December 2011, it has received extremely positive feedback from our customers who are excited about the added convenience,” said John Worthington, Kohl’s chief administrative officer, in a press release. “From our solar program to our green building efforts, Kohl’s has been pleased to be able to grow sustainability programs that make sense for our business, customers and communities – and our EV program is one more great example.”
