Hey Mom and Dad: At What Age Should Girls Be Allowed to Wear Makeup?
Middle school, high school or never? What's your take?
Welcome to "Hey, Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area.
Young ladies have been sneaking makeup past their parents for generations. They'll wait to get to school to put it on, and wipe it clean away before they dare step back in the house. It's an issue that's not likely to go away any time soon.
That got us wondering ... when should girls have to stop sneaking around?
What's an appropriate age for young ladies to be allowed to wear makeup?
Kelly Ann: Ummm....if you ask my 8 year old now, but I remember 6th grade. — Woodridge Patch Facebook
Nicole Kinnaman Seidler: My daughter has been wearing makeup, first for play around 5th grade. She would occasionally sneak out to school with mascara on. She is now in 7th grade and I now let her. She experimented first too much of course and now she puts it on so tastefully, you can't tell she is wearing makeup but she looks great. I gave her that freedom, but at the same time if it was to much she had to take it off. She has also decided that she wants to become a makeup artist. she does do a great job. I think if you give them that freedom they eventually will figure it out with a little help along the way. When you restrict to much I think is when they go overboard. — Lemont Patch Facebook
Laurie Dufrene: I've taught my daughter (15) if she ever wore makeup to use to enhance her beauty... Not cover it up or look cheap. She wears lip balm only. Refuses to wear anything else because she is being raised knowing her true beauty. — Lemont Patch Facebook
Jan Gombos Woods: Well, I was allowed to wear it in 7th grade & in moderation, that's also what we've told our daughter... that's next school year for her, so she doesn't have to wait too long, ha ha! — Downers Grove Patch Facebook
