Goodwill to Open Lemont Store on Aug. 24

The retail and donation center will celebrate its grand opening weekend Friday, Aug. 24, through Sunday, Aug. 26, at 1146 State St.

A new Goodwill retail and donation center is set to open this month in Lemont.

The 21,000-square-foot store, located at 1146 State St., will celebrate its grand opening weekend Friday, Aug. 24, through Sunday, Aug. 26, with contests, prizes, refreshments and giveaways. Doors open at 8 a.m. Friday, 9 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.

Hourly contests and prices will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Throughout the weekend, customers will receive a free reusable shopping bag with any purchase, while supplies last.

The first customers to donate or purchase items will win special prizes. Customers may also enter to win a gift basket with a hat and card signed by Chicago Blackhawks players Duncan Keith and Patrick Sharp, as well as a $25 Goodwill gift card.

Goodwill stores sell previously donated items such as clothing, kitchen accessories and more. Gently used items are accepted at the donation center on the south end of the building.

More than 40 workers have been hired to staff the Lemont location, according to Cheryl Lightholder, spokesperson for Goodwill Industries of Metropolitan Chicago.

Lightholder told Patch in April that the new store will be "a great addition" to the growing company.

"It's important to look for locations that will support donations, and we think the Lemont community will certainly do that," she said. "We also look at locations where we can provide an easy, convenient way for people in that area to shop."

According to Goodwill's website, 84 percent of revenue from all retail centers go toward the company's mission of providing training, employment and supportive services for people with disabilities or disadvantages.

The company also offers vouchers and discounts at its retail centers for those in need through the "Goodwill Cares" program. In Lemont, the local partners are the Hope and Friendship Foundation and Lemont Township.

The Goodwill store will be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The donation center will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Now lets get the "empty for an eternity" gas station either torn down or leased!

The problem with tearing down the gas station is the cost incurred by having the underground tanks removed. This is probably why the lot hasn't sold as it is a pretty good location. The responsibility to remove them would fall to whomever would buy the property. At this point, they're even probably in too bad of disrepair for another gas station to use them as well, so they'd still need to tear them out and put in new ones.

I believe the village is making plans to get rid of that gas station. I'll see if I can find the link to the story that had that info.

"During the meeting, Mayor Reaves thanked village staff and trustees for working with the Harrises and the building developer to finalize the deal.

"It's a true testament to how hard everyone is working," Reaves said of the new store.

"We can hear what's wrong (with the village) on a daily basis. It's hard, but days like today definitely make it all worth while," he said.

Reaves said the village is working with the developer to start the process of tearing down the vacant gas station on State Street in anticipation of Ace Hardware's opening.

Harris said he's hopeful the store will generate more traffic along State Street, which could lead to more businesses coming to town."

Goodwill looks awesome! I'm excited to have such a philanthropic organization in our town! This is a sign of great decision making by our town's council. Love it. Can't wait to go in. I love Goodwill.

Kerry , How about this ....don't go !!! You have nothing but negative comments about everything. The place looks good ! What we don't need is more vacancies , look around . A downtown location is death for a new business. Sears was useless, I TRIED to shop there and always ended up at Home Depot. I welcome the Goodwill store and wish them well!
