"Jolly Boy" George Hofmeyer of Lemont appeared at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1933.

The Lemont Area Historical Society has generously offered to share photos and accompanying information with Patch readers each week, depicting people, places and things from the village's storied past.

This week's featured photo is of a local celebrity of sorts -- George Hofmeyer of Lemont, who appeared at the Century of Progress International Exposition (a.k.a. the Chicago World's Fair) in 1933. When this picture was taken, "Jolly Boy" George was 52 years old, stood 6 feet tall and weighed in at 674 pounds.
