Did Life in the Shadow of President Obama Push Jesse Jackson Jr. Over the Edge?
A columnist who's covered Jackson since his first days in public office suggests Obama's rise sent Jackson to his downfall.
U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.— who came into Congress bearing the heavy weight of his family name and lofty ambitions — counted Chicago's third airport as a signature issue for the better part of his time in office.
And there's been no stauncher advocate for that project than Southtown columnist Phil Kadner.
Construction of such an airport would bring much-needed jobs to an area plagued by chronic unemployment, and the airport itself, once realized, would serve as an economic engine for decades to come. So went the mantra. Targeted for a rural area outside the 2nd District until the latest congressional remap put the land into his district, Jackson's pursuit of the airport irritated Democrats and Republicans alike, from Chicago to Will County.
Kadner, knowing how deeply the people of the south suburbs hurt for jobs, chronicled every turn of the effort to make the airport a reality, literally writing hundreds of thousands of words in its favor. As such, there may be no journalist in the Chicago area who knows Jackson as well as Kadner, who grew to like the congressman.
Until now. In his Friday column, Kadner writes:
One day, I was invited to Jackson’s house, after asking about an accusation that the family actually lived in Washington, D.C., not Chicago.
That’s when I first met Sandi Jackson, who greeted me with, “We laugh at the way you tear into politicians all the time. I told Jesse that he better not do anything stupid or you’ll be writing about him next.”
Jackson chuckled and said, “That’s right. I’m not ever going to do anything that would let you make fun of me.”
That was before a friend of the congressman’s was accused of offering Gov. Rod Blagojevich a bribe in exchange for giving Jackson a U.S. Senate seat.
That was before the public learned Jackson had a “social acquaintance” in Washington, D.C., who was being flown into Chicago by the congressman’s friend.
That was before the FBI began investigating Jackson’s use of campaign funds to buy his “social acquaintance” a $40,000 Rolex watch and to remodel his Washington home.
Sources are saying Jackson is negotiating a plea deal with federal prosecutors that would have him give up his seat in Congress — after handily winning re-election last Tuesday without lifting a finger to campaign. Speculation already has turned to the names of those who might succeed him in a special election next spring.
Steve Rhodes, writing in Chicago Magazine last month, wonders if Jackson's bariatric surgery brought on his bipolar disorder and the behavior in which he's engaged the last several years, from his covetous pursuit of Obama's Senate seat in 2008 to his affair with a swimsuit model and the FBI investigation into his campaign fund.
But in the days after President Obama's re-election, Kadner offers this insight into Congressman Jackson, into whom so many in his district placed much faith and hope, writing:
He dreamed of becoming the first black president and spent more than a dozen years in Congress, only to see his aspirations crushed when Obama seemingly came out of nowhere (from Illinois no less) to steal his legacy and capture the national imagination.
I believe Jackson’s character flaws might have remained buried if it hadn’t been for that series of events.
Relegated to national irrelevance, I think something snapped inside the man.
Many are tearing into Jackson and making fun of him. But instead of making jokes, the journalist who covered many of Jackson's triumphs may well be writing the congressman's political obituary next.
How Much Did Your Vote Cost? We went negative big time in this election. A record-setting amount of money was spent on campaigns — $6 billion. According to ProPublica's PACTrack data, $1.78 was spent on every vote for Barack Obama, $1.39 of which went toward attacking Mitt Romney. And $6.23 was spent on every Romney vote, $5.49 went toward attacks on Obama. The biggest spending PACs were Restore Our Future, Inc., and Karl Rove's American Crossroads, reports Pro Publica.
From the Founding Fathers to the 21st Century: Here's a bit of presidential history for you. Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe, presidents three, four and five, each served two terms as president, a successive three-peat not duplicated until Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Yeah, that's it! Poor Jesse fell over the edge.
If I broke the law a year ago, I would have already been prosecuted and in jail.
Get with it America, and while you're at it study economics and the history of it, also a little bit of time on financial management, you owe it to your children.

JJJ's "mental illness" is nothing but a ruse he's used to delay or possibly avoid prosecution for the crimes he's committed. Let's face it. If he wasn't the Reverend's son, he probably would have been put in jail along with his friend, the notorious Governor Blago.

Obama's credentials far surpass Jackson: Columbia and Harvard Law against North Carolina AT&T. U of I Law (and never passed the bar exam). When you account for the likely affirmative action dimunition of even thoose qualifications, that is a pretty undistinguished record at the presidential level, where Harvard Yale and Princeton degrees are de rigeur. If his name was Jesse Johnson Jr. he'd be hustling tithes at some storefront church on Stony Island, or chasing dog bite cases from a storefront law office.... Icaraus, meet Daedalus.

Some would argue that we have too many Ivy Leaguers serving as President. What's wrong with politicians who have degrees with state universities? After all, U of I's law school is one of the top 20 law schools in the country. The late John Cribbett, former law school dean and chancellor of the Urbana campus, wrote the most-often-used textbook for property classes.
I think the GOP would have been better off nominating Tim Pawlenty for president, and he had two degrees from the University of Minnesota, if my recollection is correct.

I will stand for you and your family. I will fight for your share of resources to help you get off our backs and on to our feet. The status quo doesn't care or love us at all.
As you just witnessed what they did when JJJ in 24 hours after the election betrayed 181,000 supporters in an instant. He and the status quo had this all planned months ago. Including Sandi Jackson knew the whole plan from the beginning.
Enough of the deceit, the constant lying and scheming on us. They want the seat and we want the seat. We must have it!
So now we all know and you have me as your champion for jobs, education grants and home foreclosures just to name a few.
Support my candidacy for this seat. Let's reclaim our right to life, liberty and the pursuit to happiness.
Get me on the ballot when the word of JJJ vacate the seat comes from the Gov.
We can & We must win this seat. We know the truth now.

I think Obama's priorities and his immature and childlike sense of "entitlement" have overturned his judgement on the world status and opinion of America and the way we are prejudged and fore judged by MANY nations, and her peoples, of the world. Obama, and his wife, in my opinion hold a strong "contempt" for America. They have shown no respect for the office of, President Of The United States. Only did Obama recant his loyalty to his church and it's "pastor" when it was made public it's "pastor" asked God to, damn America. He sat thru the racist and biased rantings of the "pastor's" Sunday sermons for many years. All of this is and has been documented. I would never put my trust in such a bigoted person who has failed miserably to lead this nation in the right direction. Bigoted from his attempt to "buying each other a beer" on the White House lawn to saying if he had a son he would have "looked like Trayvon". This "president" should have put fear in the hearts of Americans.
But I'll give Obama credit for one thing, he is living proof that familiarity breeds contempt.
Repudiation of Obama's radical and risky socialist agenda, should have put Americans on guard.

Rudy, regardless about how it came about, President Obama gave the order to kill bin Laden. If the mission failed and all of those heroic Navy Seals were killed, who's fault would it be? I'm sure you would say Obama. You can't have it both ways.
The election is over, so constant complaing about the outcome will only keep the country divided. How about if both parties in Washington and the rest of us pull together to keep America great and on track.

You are right about Republicans caring for our country and it's citizens. However, I believe that Republicans care MORE about the country as a whole than Democrats do. A few weeks ago, you were on here claiming Romney was going to win the election easily and I believe you may have called me stoned for stating President Obana would be re-elected with more than 300 Elecroral College votes. We had an office pool and I predicted 332, with every state correct. It seems I am certainly more informed about these things than you. So let's try that fact thing one more time about executive orders:
http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/o/OBAMA-EXECUTIVE-ORDERS-NUMBER.htm.
I know you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink. You can also introduce facts to an idiot but you can't make them see. You my friend are that idiot. BTW, that video you refer to is also fiction. Just some clever editing that was poorly done. It's been on YouTube since the 2008 election and ayone with a working brain understands it's garbage. Yet, you don't, go figure.
An economic idiot? The Dow Jones was around 7800 on inaugaration day 2008. Election day 2009 it was over 13,000 but he's killing the economy? There are too many factors in the economy for me to understand but those are facts. On the other hand, I doubt you're capable of making change for a dollar.

I bet you are correct. Jackson will plea that the disease caused redecorating his Washington D.C. home and purchasing a $40,000 Rolex watch for his girlfriend with campaign funds. And it was the disease that made him become a bar fly in D.C. a few weeks ago meeting with different woman and having his affairs. It was the disease who wanted him to "buy" Obama's senate seat. But what do you expect when you have Jesse Jackson as your father and the Democratic Chicago corruptive gangsters as your cronies.

There is no requirement to provide to a list of donations on a website, especially if a candidate does not have any donations from anyone. A candidate does not have to file with the FEC if the total donations during the quarterly filing period does not exceed $3,500. The election is over. It is a little late with allegations.
Go look at JJJr's last quarterly filing, numerous listings of American Express paid from the campaign, with no detail. Thousands of dollars paid out for what? JJJr's campaign has spent over a million dollars in this election cycle, but just one robo call. What was the money for? No one ever brought it up--except the FBI. Joe Lake, Chicago

Search for Mr. Lewis and the result is NO outside contributions.
Search for JJJr and you come up with $45,000 in contributions.

As far as WMD, they were used in Halabja near the end of the Iraq-Iran war. They were responsible for around 5000 deaths and 10,000 injuries. That happened in March of 1988. So if he had them in 1988, what makes you think he did not have them later?

Ok, Bush supporters, you need to know this: Bush is a pariah in the GOP. The party has asked him to stay away from conventions, endorsements and campaigning . It has. Nothing to do w/ his time dedicated to good works. I move in some high level Repub. circles. In 2009, I was hanging out at a pool in Jupiter, FL, and heard a top GOP operative on the phone regarding speakers for an event. He mentioned GWB's name then said: "... no, you know how he turns people off." The GOP is ashamed of what went down in those eight years. Individuals may claim otherwise, but then challenge them to tout a GWB endorsement .

I hate that my children have to grow up in a society of pure hatred, because reading these post everything is about the hatred of one group or another. It's hard to teach my children to not see color when that is all these "so called adults" see. Each person has it made up in their mind exactly how they feel about someone of a different race. Whites think all blacks are lazy and on welfare, (even though white women are the biggest recipents of welfare benefits,) blacks think that all white people are racist,(which I'm having a hard time disagreeing with judging from these post), and all hispanics are here illegally trying to live off of the government freebies, (I don't want my tax dollars supporting this either). All democrats want handouts, (although I'm sure republicans receive welfare and food stamps as well), all republicans are rich white men or redneck racist (welllllll) and everyone is right and everyone else is wrong. Everyone has a way to fix everything that is wrong in the entire nation. Tell you what, run for office, win and good luck getting bipartisan support, its a myth, doesn't exist. Whatever party you represent the other party, especially if they are the majority, will fight you to the death. Doesn't matter if you are a democrat or republican. Whatever your ideas are they will never come to fruition if you have to count on bipartisan support. Doesn't matter if your idea will help they will never let it pass.

I don't care what color skin you or your mother have and my kids are taught to judge on actions, not race. They are taught this because in my house it is what you do or say that counts, not the color of your skin.

Since you have already posted that "all republicans are rich white men or redneck racists", I'm sure that you mixed race children are being raised in a home that views people as people (not) since you set such a fine example.
I also find it amusing that you cannot see how your remarks speak to your true character. When you post hateful and racist comments and then try to accuse others of the very behavior that you have displayed, it makes me laugh!

You never mentioned anything else in the post except the line about the republicans which lets me know that you are a republican. I also stated that all democrats want handouts, no response on that, all hispanics are here illegally, no remark on that. So you let your true colors shine through brightly. Im done as this is so far from the subject in the article its ridiculous...like you. It was a comment on perception....get it? How each race and party affiliation is perceived in the media. I only picked one line? I started with the two most racist remarks you made.
#1. "blacks think that all white people are racist,(which I'm having a hard time disagreeing with judging from these post),"
#2. " all republicans are rich white men or redneck racist (welllllll)".
Here is a third line: Whites think all blacks are lazy and on welfare, (even though white women are the biggest recipents of welfare benefits,) by the way, it's recipients. Maybe if you were not so busy being bigoted, you could learn to spell or use spell-check.
The reason that I only picked the two that I picked, was because those two were the most obvious in their racist tone. I noticed that you used parenthesis to voice your own feelings about the statements. Those are a clear example of your racist feelings. You also mention that you mother is white, I wonder why? Then you mention your mixed race husband and a bevy of black and white relatives and mixed race children, again, I wonder why? Could it be that skin color matters to you more than you are willing to admit? I think so and that is a shame.
With your mixed race husband, black and white family, and children that are mixed as well, one would think that you would be more tolerant than most. I guess you missed that bus.
So yes, you can try to attack me for pointing out what your true beliefs are, but remember, you posted them and now you are trying to blame me for your racist views.

DJP, I'm not a Democrat or a progressive. It's just that, this time around President Obama was the better choice. I'm not getting any "revenge & free stuff", just voting for what I think is best for the country.
All of this marxist, socialist, nonsnse is just that, nonsense. No different than the birther movement or that he's a muslim, a communist a fascist or whatever other garbage he has been accused of. He has done nothing that would indicate any of that which is supportable. The bailouts? That was TARP, instituted under President Bush, and it was the right thing to do. "ObamaCare"? It's not socialized medicine, it's healthcare insurance reform meant to provide access and lower cost. If we as taxpayers have to pay for healthcare for the poor that can't afford it, doesn't it make more sense to pay the premium than the entire bill? That's the crux of it all, which is why Mitt Romney put it in place in MA.
The GOP needs to get in touch with the reality that we're a diverse nation now if they don't want to be entirely marginalized.

@BlackHawks Fan: What is most disturbing about this group and what they advocate: Marxism. Marxism has failed wherever it has been tried ie Greece, Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea etc. These countries have the lowest standards of living, the highest unemployment, the lowest productivity and the least amount of personal liberty & are run by forms of government that these same "teachers" and people advocate. Don't forget they are teachers! They are TEACHING our children. As a taxpayer this is beyond disturbing. Too, here is another example of our outstanding teachers. Why are they attending this conference on Saturday? Read the article: http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2012/11/chicago-teachers-union-sponsors-teaching-for-social-justice-curriculum-fair.html
Click on the nice poster with the FIST PUMP. Teachers are increasingly becoming more radical. And as taxpayers we need to shine the light on this issue. Also, these are the same people who are quick to shut down an entire school system to DEMAND more money and benefits.

Benefits and pay doesn't sound to radical to me. Maybe if you are the owners of walmart or papa johns it would be radical. To me, it sounds like a legitimate grievance that wasn't addressed by the CPS, which forced the CTU to strike for a fair contract, which the CTU feels they got. Sounds pretty American to me.

Similarly what employer would allow their employees to live in their work office? No one except US Congressmen feel free to live in their congressional offices. They even wear it as a badge of honor. There is a big sense of entitlement when they feel they have the right to use their work offices as sleeping quarters.

I think it's pretty weird that some congressman sleep in their offices, but in the present day the government expects Congressmen to maintain two households, one in district and one in DC, which is not an inexpensive place, and then jet back and forth on about a weekly basis, all for about a salry the typical school superintendent here would sniff at, about $170k, -- what a first year lawyer at a big firm earns. Congressmen are probably underpaid (did I just type that?) and are prevented from moonlighting. That financial pressure, and the lack of clear rules about legitimate campaign fund use leads to a lot of the corruption problems -- although it's pretty clear that no amount of dough would have been adequate for Junior...

Is their conference registration reimbursed by the school districts? OR are they working towards their CEC's? And if CEC's what are they doing with this information? Starting a Karl Marx Club? Will this conference information filter down to unsuspecting school children? If this is how Karen Lewis and her band of union-fist-pumping-teachers spend their time off campus no one cares however, if it's on the taxpayers dime, this is disturbing. As the IEA collects 135 MILLION in teachers dues annually and 50 MILLION has gone to fund and pay the Illinois Politicians(Democrats)...Michael Madigan, Lisa Madigan, Blago and Cullerton to name a few. The teachers are paid by the taxpayers. The school curriculum and system of funding are mandated by the gov't. Public education is government education paid for and with other peoples money. So right there we already have socialism.

Richard Trumka, AFL-CIO peoplepower@aflcio.org
Unions do make concessions when times are bad. Greed and incompetent management is a company (not worker ) trademark. Then the owners always get to give their spin against the workers blaming them for going into bankruptcy.
Russ
2:45 pm on Saturday, November 17, 2012
Trumka letter:
Wall street vultures are blaming workers for getting rid of your sweets.
You might have heard that Hostess Brands, the company that makes Twinkies, Ding Dongs and other desserts, filed for court permission to go out of business, and that its blaming a worker strike for the shutdown.
The Wall Street hedge fund managers who run the company have squeezed every cent out of Hostess for eight years. And they’ve put their friends with no experience in the baking industry in high-level management positions.
What’s happening here is a classic Bain Capital-style assault—blame the little guy to cover the greedy corporate policies that are gutting the middle class.
It’s not just happening to the workers who make the great products Americans love. What’s happening at Hostess is happening to workers all over this country. It’s wrong. And it has to stop.
Crony capitalism and poor management drove Hostess into the ground, not the workers who are now paying the price. In this struggling economy, the greedy corporate executives are willing to let 18,000 people lose their jobs—just so they can pad their pockets.
Hostess' executives are now blaming workers who’ve offered their company multiple concessions and want it to succeed. This is what’s wrecking our country.
Workers have borne the brunt of bad decision-making by executives who didn’t know anything about the baking business. And they’re the ones getting fired?

I AM CHANGE YOU CAN COUNT ON TO BE THE VOICE YOU HAVE NOT HAD IN DECADES. 38,733 STARTED OFF AND I HOPE TO WIN A MAJORITY OF JACKSON VOTERS THAT NOW SEE THAT I STAND FOR TRUTH, JUSTICE AND FAIRNESS.

voting for you Marcus is like voting for a child. You don't even know how completely unqualified you are. Seriously, you can't bring about change. in this district we are so burdened by democrat machine politics, and corruption that we will never escape it. Demographically the 2nd district is 73% black and hispanic and those numbers will continue to increase. It's going to remain Democrat and remain corrupt. there will never be a party to chanllenge the machine in place, unless lines are redrawn. It's over folks...

@NotBuyingIt: I ♥ your analogy of Marcus and how he is uniquely-unqualified to represent the fine people of the 2nd Congressional district thus, my apologies to you. Also, I would like to respond to Butch's concerns however, I did not know one sentence could contain 145 words. Where I come from that is called a paragraph. But as you can see, Butch could possibly be a recipient of a Karen Lewis led Chicago-Public-School education.

Not qualified??? So you say. My U.S. Constitution says that to be a U.S. Rep., you must be 25 years old and reside 7 years in the United States. THAT'S IT!
I am more than qualified to represent this district. It is going to take a common man to run this district right. I have name recongnition, 38,733 that will stand with me and they see we need someone like them in the seat representing this mainly working man's district. I have no criminal record or past. I love the people of this district and I should win in a walk after what we just witnessed the machine do to 181,000 plus knowing JJJ was plea bargaining for months.
I won't lead you astray then drop you off at the bridge.
I AM THE ONE YOU WANT AND NEED. PERIOD.

Yes, NBI. I did the video for the benefit of voters in our dist. Funny his friends or he citing defamation of character. What a crock. Lewis wrote it and now upset cause I posted it and blaming everyone but himself for. What a great rep he would make. Not.... Vote but not for Lewis.

Yes, for public knowledge. They are trying to claim defamation of character. That's only when lies have been told. The only liar again is Lewis. And unlike JL says, the vid remains. Not hate, just truth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfqmsCbixYE&feature=plcp Oops gotta go.

JJJr has to resign the House seat on or before Dec. 12, 2012 for the election date to be set the same as as the municipal elections. Are posters going to keep writing the same thing about the 20-30 others who will file for the ILCD 2nd District for the next six months. What is the point of bullying one announced candidate? Why not wait until you can bully 20-30 ILCD 2nd District candidates. Just get a life. Joe Lake, Chicago

NEWSFLASH -If Mel does run for the coveted and unprestigious 2nd dist, he will have to answer a lot more questions than why he was set up with his 16 yr old going on 26 looker. I don't see him doing that he will likely try to do it all over again because he cannot do much else in this state that sends it's tax moneys to Israel.
MEL Will sell his soul to the Zionists who have gotten rid of their only outspoken congressional critic Gus Savage they gave him a radio gig on the old WCFL to make him sound like a RHODES Scholar even in today's paper Sneed repeats the ,Big lie, the boys from Hymie town have paid back JJ SR so it will be interesting to see if they silence Mel by drying up the endorsements or make him a potted plant.

I feel sorry for people who work in the private sector. It is toast. Job cuts have only just begun. As the healthcare law is implemented, it will only get worse. On top of the actual cuts, full time employment will be a thing of the past in many industries. The trillions of dollars of capital sitting on the sidelines will not be invested. Businesses will downsize even further and expect more from those who do actually have jobs. They will get by for less by stretching those that are there. Sad, nobody cares about growth. We have no growth in the last 4 years and it is accepted. If you make 45,000 or less in this country, it is easier to stay at home and take the goodies from uncle sam. More people are opting for that plan on a weekly basis.
