Construction to Begin on Long-Awaited McCarthy-Walker Project

Work will begin April 15 on signal and lane upgrades at the busy Lemont intersection, thanks in part to a $1.7 million capital investment from the state.

Construction is finally set to begin at one of Lemont's busiest intersections.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced March 28 that it will contribute about $1.7 million through its Illinois Jobs Now! program to upgrade the intersection of McCarthy and Walker roads.

The work will involve the modernization of the traffic lanes and signals at the intersection, located about one-half mile west of Archer Avenue. The project is scheduled to begin April 15 and should be complete by the end of October 2013, according to state officials.

The village is expected to kick in about $60,000 for the project, which has been in the works for five years.

"The McCarthy-Walker Road project will undoubtedly enhance the traffic flow and safety of an important intersection in Lemont," said Illinois Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) in the release.  "It is a good example of state leaders working together to better our community and create well-paying jobs throughout Illinois."

The IDOT manages all state-funded road construction projects, officials said..   

“This project will create several construction jobs while making this intersection safer and improving traffic flow,” Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT)  Secretary Ann Schneider said in the release. 

D Construction, Inc. of Coal City, Illinois was the lowest of five bidders for the McCarthy-Walker project with their quote of $1,766,539. 

The state's $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! is supporting more than 439,000 jobs over six years. It the largest capital construction program in Illinois history, and is one of the largest capital construction programs in the nation.
