Construction Begins on Lemont Triangle Project

Motorists should expect delays for the next several months at the intersection of Archer Avenue and McCarthy and Derby roads, where workers will widen and resurface the pavement and install traffic control signals.

Work is finally underway on the long-awaited Triangle Project in Lemont.

Construction officially began Monday at the intersection of Archer Avenue and McCarthy and Derby roads, where workers will spend the next several months improving road and sidewalk conditions.

The project will include pavement widening, resurfacing, intersection channelization, the installation of traffic control signals, and all necessary traffic control and restoration, according to village officials.

The total cost of the project is about $2.43 million, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

All area businesses will remain open during construction, but motorists should expect delays, officials said. Construction is expected to wrap up by the end of the year.

Upgrades are also on tap for the nearby intersection of McCarthy and Walker roads. IDOT announced March 28 that it will contribute about $1.7 million through its Illinois Jobs Now! program to upgrade the area.

The work will involve the modernization of the traffic lanes and signals at the intersection, located about one-half mile west of Archer Avenue.

Lemont Village Manager Ben Wehmeier said construction is scheduled to begin next month, and should be complete by the fall.

The village is expected to kick in about $60,000 for the project, which has been in the works for five years.

"The McCarthy-Walker Road project will undoubtedly enhance the traffic flow and safety of an important intersection in Lemont," said Illinois Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) said in a press release.  "It is a good example of state leaders working together to better our community and create well-paying jobs throughout Illinois."

The state's $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! is supporting more than 439,000 jobs over six years. It the largest capital construction program in Illinois history, and is one of the largest capital construction programs in the nation.
