6A Football: Lemont Loses on 2-Point Conversion to Crete-Monee
Crete-Monee made a comeback late in the fourth quarter of their 6A semifinal playoff game against Lemont led by quarterback Marcus Terrell in their 28-27 win.
Breaking It Down: Lemont looked like it was going to be able to hold on to a lead they built in the first half once again, but Crete-Monee rallied with less than four minutes in the fourth quarter.
After a 56-yard touchdown pass by Warriors' quarterback Marcus Terrell was negated on Crete-Monee's ninth penalty of the contest, the Warriors could have lost their composure.
But they didn't.
Forty-one yards, five plays and a successful two-point conversion run in by Terrell later, Crete-Monee had its first lead of the night, going up 28-27.
Lemont had a chance to make a comeback of its own, but the offense went three-and-out with about two minutes remaining in regulation and could not stop the Warriors from gaining a first down to get the ball back again.
Patch’s MVP: Lance Lenoir, Crete-Monee. The Warriors passed the ball on 10-of-12 of their first offensive plays, and continued to attack the Indian defense via the air for the majority of the contest. Lenoir, who caught nearly everything in his reach, was a big reason for this game plan. The Crete-Monee wide receiver finished with 120 yards on 13 catches.
Lemont Stat Pack: Christos Giatras ran for 103 yards on 28 carries. Zach Brosseau completed 9-of-16 passes for 116 yards. Drew Slee was target six times, but only caught two of those passes for 73 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown. Joe Hehir made all three of his extra point attempts, and connected on field goals of 25 and 30 yards. Rick Sniegowski ran for 65 yards on five attempts, including the first score of the game, a 51-yard burst up the middle of the field. Jake Lemming recovered a fumble on a muffed punt that led to Hehir's 30-yard field goal.
Crete Monee Stat Pack: Marcus Terrell completed 23-of-40 passes for 276 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown pass caught by LaQuan Treadwill. Nyles Morgan converted three sacks. DeShaun Smith ran for 59 yards on nine carries in the second half alone.
Quotable I: “It's an amazing feeling, because nobody else has done that,” Terrell said of this year's Crete-Monee football team being the first one to make it to the state finals. "It's something that we talked about as a team and a goal that we had for ourselves."
Quotable II: "I'm proud of them," Lemont football coach Eric Michaelsen said of the Indians. "They're part of Lemont football, and I hope they have some good memories that they can look back on down the road and see this season as a positive."
Quotable III: “To be honest, I was sick all morning, and didn't even know if I was going to be able to play," Lenoir said. "I came through it, because I just wanted to be able to put my team in a position to win."
Team Records: Lemont finishes 11-2. Crete Monee is 13-0.
What’s Next: While Lemont's season is over, Crete Monee will move on to face Cary-Grove next Saturday at 1 p.m. in the 6A IHSA state finals, after their 42-21 win over Lake Forest.

Crete-Monee not only conquered the Lemont football squad but also the referees. The IHSA needs to launch an investigation into the phantom penalties that were called last night. The referees were doing their best to gift the game to Lemont but pure talent and determination from the amazing Warrior team prevailed. Not to take away anything from a worthy opponent in the Indians that tested the Warriors like no other. Destiny and history was on our side and the road to the State Champioship is now a reality. Go forward young men and make it happen!

In all honesty, you need to take a chill pill. There was no grand conspiracy to rob Crete-Monee of the game, they just played sloppy. You need to step back and realize this was just a high school football game, enjoy the win and move on. By the way what position does your son play, how many penalties did he draw...LOL.

How about the ref that was big and heavy he could barely move.

The refs were terrible (one in particular) and Crete still won! How do you play sloppy and still win? You sound like a sore loser Brad. You must have been one of the fans who were showing poor sportsmanship by yelling "overrated" at our #1 player. IHSA needs to look into the matter of refs. They get paid and therefore should do their job the right way. Go Crete!

Dearest Brad .... It was obvious to all that there was a bad batch of referees at this game ... Conspiracy ? That's a matter of opinion but it needs to be looked
into .... Surely if the shoe was on the other foot would you not feel the same way ??? To some maybe just a high school game but these young men's lives have been changed. We the families have seen boys become confident young men. Lemont football put it to these guys .... Hats off to you ... Sloppy play ??? That's a stretch maybe ... But sloppy enough to win .... Yes today we take our chill pill .... But we are preparing for battle next week in Champaign ...

It had to have been one of the most exciting games Ive ever attended, It was the sweetest victory for Crete Monee overcoming the replacement referee's one sided penalties and the Lemont fans in the stands chanting loudly "Overrated" (Probably directed towards Lequan Treadwell) the #1 reciever in the nation, and maybe the whole team in general... Who knows,The kids from both teams played great, but even greater was seeing Lemont H/S fans eating crow. I'm not a parent nor a relative of any player on any of the teams but there were a few calls on Monee that were completely unfounded, the referee's do need training as well as a possible explanation on their actions and possible suspension or removal

Dear A Mom,
I actually did wonder why your fans showed terrible sportsmanship...
And we are very happy we won, so if we point out the obvious after a win, that must mean we want something that is very wrong to be fixed, not just for us, but for ALL teams. May this never happen to your team and you lose because of it... that would be the real shame...

A.mom.... Please explain in detail what you witnessed as bad manners and bad sportsmanship on our team ? Please explain why the Lemont fans were chanting overrated ? Explain the conduct of the referees ? Whomever was chanting that on the Lemont side should be ashamed of themselves . That in of itself should have drew a penalty. What a terrible example you displayed ... You can't start something that's already finished ....

I was on the sidelines of the Lemont Warrior game last night as a photographer with no agenda and one ref that saw a Lemont player hit a Warrior player out of bounds did not throw the flag but chased the Lemont player down and screamed at him not to do that like he was yelling at a child and not a football player who should have been flagged for a late hit.

I am an alum of CMHS and as I was watching the game on highschoolcube.com, I was thinking that the refs were a little biased. However, both teams fought extremely hard and should be proud of themselves and how they left everything on the field. I was not there to hear the chants of overrated...but kids just try to get in the heads of the players on the field. I am sure they are all jealous of the skills of Treadwell and where he will end up. Congrats to both teams on a great game and good luck to the WARRIORS!

Way to go Warriors! As an '84 graduate I am proud of their accomplishments. We were out of town and had a group of 9 watching on Highschoolcube.com only 2 of us were Crete grads. There were several guys from Lockport and other area towns, and we all thought from what we could see on cube that the game was poorly officiated. I was at the last couple games, and last week we were trying to figure out why the game was predetermined for a Lemont home game? Does anyone know why? See ya'll in Champaign!

Seriously? ALL of the Lemont fans? Not one thing was said in my post about the players on your team. Don't assume. Maybe write IHSA? Blog fighting won't help the situation. Keep it positive, both teams read this! Please refrain from bullying.

Crete had a Great team and Congrats !!! I was watching on the cube also and Noone has said anything about the touchdown Lemont had and the replay clearly showed the receiver was inbounds when he caught it and the ref who was right there called him out and no touchdown !!! If anyone got the shaft of bad calls it was Lemont because with that TD Lemont would the one going to state . God Bless and Crete Hope you Win!!

It was a great game, played well on both sides. Congrats to C-M for finally being able to get a taste of Champaign. Conspiracy - probably not. Pro refs make mistakes too. And as stated, they were made on both sides. Regarding the "over-rated" chant. Come on. That is heard all over sports arenas. I'm sure that C-M's star was not upset by it. Should have taken it as a compliment. Playful banter is all it is. It could have been far worse. They could have chanted "Never Rated" instead.

Crystal, from what I read, nobody said that Crete only had one player. They were talking about the taunting that came from Lemont fans directed towards that one player. Crete is loaded with talent as well as Lemont. Like Bill said, that player probably wasn't upset. He probably hears it often and I'm guessing uses it as motivation to play even harder.
Usually it's the losing team who cries "bad officiating" but when the winning team says it, it's worth looking into.
Good luck to Crete...class 6A rules!!!
